Designing with Purpose: Jane Lockhart on Livable Luxury and the Art of Organized Spaces

Jane Lockhart (@janelockhartdesign), a two-time NKBA Pinnacle Award winner and founder of Jane Lockhart Design, is known for interiors that feel serene yet stand up to real family life. That balance is exactly what drew her to Yamazaki Home. She appreciates Yamazaki Home's dedication to "simplicity and organization," she said. Jane believes our designs "make spaces look finished, beautiful and clean."

A Lifelong Love of Design

Jane's path started in childhood, building furniture and decorating dollhouses. Today she leans more towards "quiet, organized spaces," with a signature mix of light and dark tones. She said, "I love the sunshine, but I also love a dark, cozy room." Her inspiration comes from nature, fabric, art, and culture, and she loves helping people learn to mix and match tones, styles, and materials.

She launched Jane Lockhart Design in 1997 after an opportunity with HGTV Canada gave her the push to leave the corporate world.

Her Proudest Project and Her Dream

Jane's favorite project to date is a luxury estate in Caledon, Ontario, with builder Chatworth Fine Homes. "It was quiet luxury in the countryside," she said, crediting a collaborative team and involved clients. Looking ahead, she'd love to take on a large commercial hospitality project ... "something like a Las Vegas hotel."

What "Livable Luxury" Really Means

For Jane, luxury shifts with lifestyle. "For a lake house, materials are a bit more wash and wear, shapes are softer, more casual. In a city home, shapes are typically a bit more polished." The constant is always the client. She said "We identify with our home, so the spaces may be slightly different depending on lifestyle."

Designing for Real Life: Storage That Disappears

In high-traffic areas, Jane's rule is simple: If you can hide the clutter, then make it beautiful. Her go-to storage zones are the mudroom, bathroom, closet, bedroom, and laundry room. Small details help tie it all together too, such as repeating colour throughout a space to give a more cohesive look.

Jane's Favorite Yamazaki Home Pieces

Over-the-Sink Tosca Dish Rack

A handy Over-the-Sink Dish Rack which "keeps everything organized and tidy, and allows dishes to be kept out of the sink."

Rolling Bathroom Organizer

This clever Bathroom Organizer is "functional and hides the mess," while keeping bathroom supplies tidy and accessible.

Six-Tier Shoe Rack

This Six-Tier Shoe Rack works in the open or tucked in a closet, "in big or small spaces."

Bringing It Home

From a countryside estate to a well-organized mudroom, Jane Lockhart's work shows that good design scales. With Yamazaki Home, she's found designs built on that same idea: simplicity that makes everyday spaces work harder and look better doing it
